He was born on Sunday, July 28, 1935 to the late Wayne Darkes and Mary M. Darkes nee Houtz in Lebanon. He worked as a sheet metal worker and was a veteran of the Air Force in the Korean Conflict. Sonny was involved with the American Legion, fast pitch softball (city, county and industrial) through 1968-1985. He also coached midget football and baseball. Sonny also enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and spending time with his family.
Surviving are wife Nadine E. Darkes nee Rhoades; children Wayne E. Darkes, Jr., Kerry L. Darkes, William Joe Darkes, Wallace J. Turner, April Eastwood, Cindy Carter; 19 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by son Roger Darkes; daughter April M. Kirkwood; grandson Joshua Eastwood; brother Kenneth Darkes; sister Thelma Walmer.
Viewing will be on Monday, July 18, 2016 from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM at Christman's Funeral Home, Inc., 226 Cumberland Street, Lebanon.
Funeral services will be on Monday, July 18, 2016 at 1:00 PM at the funeral home.
Burial will be at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville, with full military honors, following the service.
